Election Week Thoughts

In case you've been living underneath a rock for the past few months, you're fully aware that this week we elect our President for the next four years, along with various other Congressional leaders and state, county and city officials. Don't worry, I'm not about to embark on a political rant about who you should for and why. I believe that it's really no one's business except my own who I vote for, and I don't really care who you vote for (sorry, but it's true). Besides, if you want political rants you can probably get your fill on Facebook.

I do, however, want to encourage you to do a few things this week:

1. VOTE! The right to vote is one of our most precious rights in the U.S. and not one to be taken lightly. If at all possible, please exercise your right to vote and head to the polls tomorrow. Even if you're convinced that your vote doesn't matter, at least do it to honor the men and women who have given their blood and very lives throughout our nation's history to gain and secure our voting freedoms.

2. Be prayerful for our country. Pray that God will allow the right leaders to come into office at the right time. That doesn't mean all Republican leaders. That doesn't mean all Democrat leaders. (I'm pretty sure God has no party affiliation.) He knows exactly what we need when we need it.

Pray for the unity of our country. No matter the outcome of this election, a large percentage of the population will be unhappy. Our nation is deeply divided in so many areas. Pray that our leaders will cross party lines and work together for the good of our country.

Pray too that, regardless of the outcome, we will be respectful of our leaders. All of our nation's leaders (including those we didn't vote for) need prayers. Remember to pray for their families as well.

3. Finally, remember that God is in control and is truly the only One we can depend on no matter what. For the last couple of days, Psalm 20:7 has been running through my mind: "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God."

I think that verse can be applied to today's temptations to put our trust in other people and things besides God:

Some trust in candidates and political parties...
we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

Some trust in jobs...
we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

Some trust in social security...
we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

Some trust in military might...
we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

Some trust in churches...
we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

Some trust in marital status...
we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

Some trust in houses...
we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

The hope for our nation lies not in any candidate or political party, not in any economic breakthrough or military action. Our only hope is the Lord our God. Let us prayerfully remember that especially this week.

Amen! I hope that regardless of who is actually elected, we can begin to work together as a country again. If "my" candidate does not win, I would much rather focus on going forward than complaining for the next four years! : )
