Discerning Truth

There's been a great deal of buzz in the Christian media about New Age teacher Eckhart Tolle's book, A New Earth, and Oprah Winfrey's promotion of it. I've not read the book nor do I intend to, but I have heard and read some accounts of how the book is being promoted.

What is especially disturbing to me is Ms. Winfrey's claim that she is a "free-thinking Christian" who believes that there are multiple paths to God. She has a great deal of influence on today's culture, and it is obvious that Satan is using that influence to confuse people and lead them away from Christ.

Nancy Leigh DeMoss addressed this book, and particularly Ms. Winfrey's promotion of it, on a recent "Revive Our Hearts" broadcast. She and her guests did an excellent job of addressing many of the points in the book and providing discernment between the truth of the Gospel and the New Age message being spread. You can listen to the broadcast or read transcripts of it here.

Oprah seems to be very into feeling powerful. This train of thought seems to make her feel very open minded, above others and therefore powerful. I've watched some of her interviews with this author and it's almost like watching cult films. Her influence is frightening. Her ability to sway people is terrifying. Nope, I won't be purchasing this book for sure. Remember sometimes the devil comes to us looking and talking very god like. I think "sheep's clothing" applies here.

I read this post last night and awoke this morning to find similar thoughts in my devoitional book. Beth Mooore points out that in David's prayer in Psalm 142, David was overwhelmed because (even though he was strong) he was fighting a secret enemy.

In reading Ephesians 6 we see we are fighting a secret enemy as well. You are right on in saying Satan is using Ms. Winfrey's position to influence other's for his cause as well as her own. We must be so careful to know the truth and resist such nice, religious sounding messages that appear good on the outside but are nothing more than Satan's handiwork.
